A nationwide survey reported that 55% of Division I male college basketball players say their coaches make demands on time and energy that prevent them from being top students. The survey, conducted by two college professors, led the researchers to believe that college athletes on scholarship are often forced to sacrifice academics in order to please their coaches, at whose discretion financial aid is distributed.

The study included 644 basketball players at 47 universities representing 37 athletic conferences.
