School Districts Schedule $13.5 Million in Facilities

New educational facilities, valued at $13.5 million, are under way or in the planning stages for the San Dieguito and Escondido Union High School districts under contracts with the San Diego-based architectural firm of Deems/Lewis & Partners.

Half of the projects are expected to be ready later this year.

Included is 60,000 square feet in the first phase of the $6-million Diegueno Junior High School in northeast Encinitas. It is part of the 20-acre site’s overall plan which includes football, track and baseball fields and an outdoor basketball facility, in addition to classrooms, libraries, locker and shower facilties and shops, parking and a bus turnaround.

The second phase will include two buildings--a classroom structure and a multipurpose building.

At San Dieguito High School, a $1.3-million face lift was started in July to include remodeling of 11 structures to be ready for occupancy later this year.

Early next year, San Pasqual High School will have the use of a counseling and guidance center. Recently completed was a $316,000, one-story classroom/office structure.

At Torrey Pines High School, a $6-million expansion program is scheduled for completion by the fall of 1987. A library/media center and 23 classrooms will be housed in a single-story, 48,000-square-foot structure on a parcel of the 60-acre campus and a future football field and track facility also are planned.

Architect John McKinley said the school districts are “maneuvering to meet the increased student enrollments and state-mandated curriculum adjustments” to meet future needs of the communities in the northern portion of San Diego County where the North City West development is anticipated to have 16,000 homes by the year 2000.
