Yorba Linda : Fears of Nearby Airport Spur Meet With FAA

Worried that a recent agreement regarding the expansion of John Wayne Airport may mean the construction of a new airport near Yorba Linda, city officials plan to meet Thursday with representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration.

In an Aug. 27 agreement, the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the City of Newport Beach and two homeowners groups agreed to abrogate past resolutions declaring that there is no site in the county for another airport. Yorba Linda officials fear that that action means the door is now open for a second airport in the nearby Chino Hills.

“I think the chances of an airport in Chino Hills are very slim. But the problem is that there are a lot of people who disagree with me,” said Councilman Henry Wedaa, also chairman of the Aviation Work Program Committee under the Southern California Assn. of Governments.

Mayor Gene Wisner also opposed that provision of the airport agreement.

“I think it should be taken out of the political arena. I think the people of Yorba Linda have the right to know exactly what’s going on,” Wisner said.

Last week, officials in Irvine joined a lawsuit against the agreement because of concern over the potential joint use of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station by commercial airline traffic and military flights.
