Loot Linked to Ramirez Found in El Paso Home

About 300 rings, necklaces, brooches and other articles allegedly stolen by Night Stalker suspect Richard Ramirez were recovered last week from the home of his sister in El Paso, it was disclosed Tuesday.

It also was revealed that Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators searched without success in El Paso for a pair of eyes gouged from the head of a murder victim in Whittier.

Searching for the eyes and other evidence in an attempt to tie Ramirez to victims of the so-called Night Stalker, Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators and El Paso police last Wednesday went to the El Paso home of Ramirez’s sister, Rosa Flores. There, they said, they found about 300 rings, necklaces, brooches and other articles allegedly stolen by Ramirez.

Eyes Not Found

The missing brown eyes, however, were not found and the search for them continues, authorities said.

Capt. Robert Grimm, commander of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide bureau, would not discuss in detail what led detectives to suspect that the eyes may have been sent to El Paso.

“We searched the (murder) scene thoroughly and they weren’t discovered,” Grimm said. “We had information that stolen property had been sent to El Paso, and the eyes were still outstanding, and that’s the rationale.”

Despite the discovery of allegedly stolen articles in Flores’ house, Grimm said Los Angeles authorities do not consider her an accessory in the case.

Not a Violation

“At this point, there is nothing to indicate that she violated California law, which says that you have to know the items that you’re accepting have been stolen,” Grimm said.

According to an affidavit filed in seeking the El Paso search warrant, authorities also hoped to find pistols, ammunition, double-edged daggers, carpet knives, handcuffs, binoculars and paraphernalia related to satanic cults that may have been used by Ramirez.

Also sought were bloodstained clothing, tape recordings, video tapes or photographs of victims.

None of those items was found at Flores’ house, nor were any discovered during a search at the El Paso home of Ramirez’s parents, Julian and Mercedes Ramirez, authorities said.

Suspected in 15 Slayings

Ramirez, a 25-year-old drifter, is suspected in at least 15 California slayings since 1984 and 21 assaults, rapes and kidnapings. Authorities believe that those crimes were committed by a lone intruder who entered homes before dawn through open windows and unlocked doors to attack his sleeping victims.

Formally charged in two homicides, Ramirez has yet to enter a plea and is being held without bail in Los Angeles County Jail.
