Figures compiled by the California Highway Patrol show that motorists are slow to comply with the new law requiring proof on demand of financial responsibility. The CHP said 40% of all the drivers who were asked last month whether they had liability insurance responded that they had no proof; 60% did. The CHP suggested that motorists copy the names of their insurance companies and the numbers of their policies on the backs of their driver’s license and auto registration cards. If the motorist is in fact insured at the moment he or she is cited for not providing proof, the proof may be sent with the bail for the original traffic citation and the motorist may deduct the bail for the citation for failing to give proof of financial responsibility.
