An undocumented alien from Mexico was held without bail in the strangulation murder of 5-year-old Anna Cruz, authorities said. Arturo Miranda, 21, was arrested by sheriff’s deputies at the Whittier-area apartment building where the child was killed. The assailant fled after the crime, but the mother, Emilia Cruz, and her son recognized him as a man who had often loitered around the building. Sheriff’s Lt. Barrett Fitzgerald said Miranda evidently “didn’t think he could be identified,” and went to an acquaintance’s apartment, where he was arrested.
