Businessmen to Meet Rebels
Defying their government, five prominent white South African businessmen plan to meet here Friday with leaders of the banned African National Congress, informed sources said today.
The sources said Anglo American Corp. Chairman Gavin W. H. Relly will lead a five-man panel to the talks with ANC president Oliver Tambo and other guerrilla leaders.
The meeting would be the first known open contact between the businessmen and the ANC, which is the main nationalist group fighting white rule of South Africa.
The South African government opposes contacts with organizations such as the ANC which have called for its violent overthrow.
The other businessmen to attend the meeting will be Tony Bloom of the Premier Group, Mike Rosholt of Barlow Rand, Chris Ball from Barclays Bank and Hugh Murray, publisher of the prestigious business quarterly, Leadership S.A., the sources said.
Major South African business groups have recently called for the elimination of apartheid.
