Less than 1 1/2 years after announcing a six-year, $100-million fund-raising drive, Pepperdine University has passed the halfway mark with $51.2 million in gifts and pledges, President David Davenport has reported to the 40-member Board of Regents.

The campaign, dubbed the “Wave of Excellence,” is tied to Pepperdine’s 50th anniversary in 1987.

The first contributions have enabled Pepperdine to start construction of the four-story Charles B. Thornton Administrative Center--named in memory of the former chairman of Litton Industries--as well as endowing faculty chairs in the law, education, business and undergraduate colleges.

The donations also have helped finance expansion of the Odell McConnell Law Center and an auditorium that will be part of a planned School of Business and Management facility on the Malibu campus.
