Assembly Floor Action:

Overdue Water Bills: Approved and sent to the governor on a 60-6 vote a bill (AB 223) by Assemblyman Steve Peace (D-Chula Vista) to prevent water companies from forcing new tenants to pay overdue bills of former tenants in order to obtain service.

Child Care: Approved and sent to the governor on a 66-8 vote a bill (AB 55) by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) to appropriate $30 million for expanded child-care programs for mothers who work or go to school.

Clove Cigarettes: Approved and sent to the governor on a 66-7 vote a bill (AB 2559) by Assemblyman Richard Mountjoy (R-Monrovia) calling for state evaluation of studies on the health hazards of smoking clove cigarettes, which are popular with some teen-agers.

Municipal Courts: Approved and sent to the governor on a 78-0 vote a bill (AB 82) by Assemblyman Elihu Harris (D-Oakland) that would create 36 new judgeships in 12 Municipal Court districts, including 10 new judgeships for Los Angeles.

Senate Floor Action: AIDS: Approved and sent to the governor on a 38-0 vote a bill (SB 1251) by Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles) to appropriate $5 million for research, treatment and educational programs regarding acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a usually fatal disease affecting an estimated 3,000 Californians, mostly homosexuals and intravenous drug users.

Unemployment Insurance Benefits: Approved and sent to the governor on a 22-9 vote a bill (SB 390) by Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles) to increase the maximum unemployment insurance weekly benefit from $166 to $181 next year, $196 in 1987, and $211 in 1988.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Approved and sent to the governor on a 37-0 vote a bill (SB 1113) by Sen. Henry J. Mello (D-Watsonville) to appropriate $800,000 for expanded research into the cause, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
