Rival Muslim militias fighting for control of Tripoli shelled residential districts of the northern port today, paralyzing the city and sending civilians underground.

Police reported 28 people killed, nearly half of them civilians, and 68 wounded in the intense artillery battle that began Sunday. Casualties included 10 Lebanese army soldiers killed and 40 wounded by two mortar rounds that crashed into their barracks overnight.
