A geyser slumbering for nearly a century came to life and spewed a column of hot water and steam up to 55 feet in the air for almost 48 hours before returning to its dormant state.

Park spokeswoman Marilee Nixon said Excelsior Geyser in the Midway Geyser Basin had not erupted since 1890, but shortly before noon Saturday it began to spray water and steam and did not stop until 9:43 a.m. Monday. Park geologists are puzzled about the cause of its rebirth, she said.
