Phil DeMontmollin has been named president of Miami Herald Publishing Co., a unit of Knight-Ridder Newspapers Inc. that publishes the Miami Herald newspaper. He replaces Beverly R. Carter, who becomes a Knight-Ridder vice president.

Additionally, Peter B. Ridder, former business manager of the Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram and currently general manager of the Wichita (Kan.) Eagle-Beacon, was named to succeed DeMontmollin as president and chief executive of Fort Wayne Newspapers Inc.
