Life Terms Given for Burning Bride to Death
From Reuters
NEW DELHI —
The husband and mother-in-law of a young Indian woman were sentenced to life in prison today for burning her to death in a dowry dispute.
The Supreme Court reversed a decision by the Delhi High Court, which had acquitted the two after saying there was no evidence that a kitchen fire in which the woman died five years ago was started deliberately. Women’s organizations say hundreds of brides are burned to death each year in wrangles over dowry payments.
