Stock Exchanges Closed as Gloria Pounds Northeast

The New York and American stock exchanges canceled all trading today as Hurricane Gloria bore down on the Northeast. Regional stock exchanges elsewhere in the country also closed, some after trading briefly.

The over-the-counter market operated by the National Assn. of Securities Dealers in Washington opened, but the group’s traders decided to halt at noon after two hours of trading.

The New York Cotton Exchange did not open at all, and the New York Commodity Exchange, the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange and New York Mercantile Exchange closed after only brief trading.

The Chicago Board Options Exchange, where stock options are traded, delayed the opening of trading because of the decision by the New York stock exchanges not to operate.
