400 New Parking Spaces to Be Built on CSULB Campus to Relieve Problem

Reacting to an acute parking problem at Cal State Long Beach, the California State University Board of Trustees has approved construction of 400 new parking spaces on the campus.

The spaces--to be constructed at a cost of $420,000 next to residence halls near Bellflower Boulevard and State University Drive--will be financed entirely by user fees, said Jon Regnier, associate vice president for physical planning. Construction is expected to begin next summer, Regnier said, with completion in time for the fall semester.

Currently, he said, CSULB has issued 22,000 valid parking stickers--800 more than last semester--for 10,000 available spaces. The problem is likely to be exacerbated, he said, by the loss of 1,600 parking spaces on 7th Steet within the next one to two years because of a planned housing project. When that happens, Regnier said, “we’ll be in deep trouble.”
