a nutworthy suggestion

Regarding Kitchen Garden by Bill Sidnam on the English Walnut (Aug. 25). A walnut tree producing nuts for a family? Only if you’re a squirrel. We can’t step outdoors barefooted during August; that’s when the squirrels strip the tree and drop broken shells everywhere. Another bonus--the purple stains that the hulls leave on the patio. They are beautiful trees, but plant them in your neighbor’s yard and plan to buy your walnuts at the market.
