UCLA quarterback Matt Stevens is expected to be out at least three weeks with the ligament injury he suffered in his left knee in the 21-14 loss at Washington last Saturday.

Stevens, who started the Tennessee game but has been No. 2 behind David Norrie since then, was hurt on his third play after replacing Norrie with 7 minutes 10 seconds left to play.

“It’s certainly disappointing to lose him like that,” UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said. “Matt Stevens wasn’t starting for us, but the fact remains that he was a real instrumental part of our team. He’s very popular. He’s a leader.”

In Stevens’ absence, redshirt freshman Brendan McCracken becomes No. 2.

Senior Ted Henderson, who averaged 36.4 yards in seven punts at Washington, impressed Donahue enough to win a scholarship. Henderson, a walk-on who had waited all this time for a chance to play, replaced graduated all-conference punter Kevin Buenafe at the start of this season and has averaged 38.7 yards.

“I haven’t had a chance to tell him yet,” Donahue said. “I guess he can read it in the papers.”

UCLA is 2-1-1 overall, 0-1 in the Pacific 10 after losing the conference opener at Washington.

Bruin Notes The Associated Press reported Monday that Washington quarterback Hugh Millen was hospitalized overnight Thursday before the UCLA game because his left knee had been swollen and infected. He was given antibiotics intravenously. The infection was believed to have been caused by a rug burn from the artificial turf. He also received intravenous medication Friday after his release. In explaining why the condition had not been announced, Millen said: “They didn’t think we should alarm anyone, including guys on the team. The knee was a little sore in the morning (Saturday), but it didn’t bother me during the game.” Millen completed 19 of 27 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

CBS announced Monday that it would televise UCLA’s game at Stanford on Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m. UCLA’s game against Arizona State at the Rose Bowl Saturday also will be televised by CBS and will begin at 11:40 a.m. The Stanford game will be UCLA’s fifth televised game this season. . . Sophomore tailback Gaston Green, who has been out since spraining a ligament in his left knee in practice before the San Diego State game, is listed as questionable for the game against Arizona State.
