Shelby Greer, accused of accompanying the Pittsburgh Pirates on road trips in order to supply some players with cocaine, pleaded guilty to seven federal drug distribution charges and was given a 12-year prison term.
Greer, 29, of Philadelphia, admitted selling cocaine to at least four former Pirates from 1981 to 1984 and was immediately taken into custody by U.S. marshals following his plea hearing in Pittsburgh before U.S. District Judge Barron McCune.
Greer, identified by outfielder Dave Parker as once being the primary cocaine supplier to Pirate players, was one of seven Pennsylvania men indicted by a federal grand jury last May 31 on cocaine trafficking charges. The indictment followed a lengthy investigation involving drug use by major league players.
