IBM boosted the speed of its fastest computers.

IBM said it is offering an option called “vector processing” on its 3090 series of mainframe computers that can triple the speed of the machines. The computer giant also said it was accelerating by about six months, to the fourth quarter of 1986, the introduction of the top-of-the-line model 400 of its 3090 series. The 3090 has been known in the industry as the Sierra and represents the latest generation of mainframe computers.
