Four legislators asked Gov. George Deukmejian to use state money to buy bottled water for more than 15,000 Hacienda Heights residents whose water supply is contaminated with an industrial chemical. The request was made by Sen. William Campbell (R-Hacienda Heights), Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles), Assemblyman Frank Hill (R-Whittier) and Assemblywoman Sally Tanner (D-El Monte) after a legislative hearing on water contamination. Torres said it would cost the state $150,000 a month to supply the bottled water. San Gabriel Valley Water Co., at the direction of the state Department of Health Services, notified 5,300 households and businesses this week that they should buy bottled water for drinking and cooking because some of the company’s wells are contaminated with dichloroethylene. The water company said customers may be able to resume drinking tap water in about three weeks after a deeper well is drilled and put into service.
