ART FOR THE MASSES

So what else is new (“Wexler’s in a Political Hot Spot--Again,” Sept. 22)? Why should Haskell Wexler’s latest “controversial” film have a better fate than “Alsino and the Condor” (Filmex, 1984) or “The Spiral” (a Filmex entry in the late ‘70s)?

The former mixed folk legend with the political realities of Central America, the latter the downfall of the Allende government with the assistance of a major American industrial giant. We (so say the distributors) do not want thought-provoking films that might cast doubts in the public’s mind as to the integrity of our government’s leaders. Leave those films for “intellectuals” in storerooms to be forgotten, with an occasional viewing to the chosen few at the Nuart or the Fox International.
