For 30 years, Thomas S. Maddock, 57, of Newport Beach, had to decide daily whether to wear a uniform or a suit, but no longer. He just retired as commanding officer of the 18,000-member U.S. Reserve Naval Construction Force, more commonly known as the “Fighting Seabees,” which gained fame during World War II. He continues as president and chief executive of Boyle Industries Engineering Corp. in Newport Beach. The move to retire was applauded by the Boyle board of directors and stockholders. “They’re pleased that I’m back at full-time,” said Maddock, a rear admiral.
