State health officials will conduct a $1-million study along the Orange and Los Angeles County coasts to determine if local sport fish are tainted with cancer-causing chemicals. The study, scheduled to begin as early as November and continue through most of 1986, will try to determine if white croakers and other fish are safe to eat, said Allan Chartrand, a Los Angeles water quality official who helped design the study. Chartrand said the study follows a cancer advisory issued in April urging limited consumption of the white croaker and other fish caught in Santa Monica Bay. Orange County officials asked that waters along their coast be included in the study as well because of the close proximity of the fish.
