U.N. Assails S. Africa for Raid in Angola
The Security Council voted unanimously Monday to condemn South Africa for its latest armed incursion into Angola on Sept. 28 and to demand that South African troops withdraw from Angolan territory.
The United States abstained from a provision of the final resolution that called on U.N. members to extend arms aid to Angola.
U.S. Ambassador Vernon A. Walters said the United States joins “in deploring this latest incursion.” However, he said that the injection of more arms can only mean an “escalation of violence, more death, more misery--Angola needs peace, not more foreign troops, foreign intervention and imported arms.”
The United States followed the same pattern in supporting a similar council resolution Sept. 20.
