Buena Park : Building Due to Start on Home for Palsy Victims
Construction is expected to begin by next month on Buena Park’s first home for people with cerebral palsy.
The 10-bedroom structure at 8361 Knott Ave., which will house up to 15 people, is the first in California to be paid for by a combination of federal, city and private money, said Greta Shultz of the United Cerebral Palsy-Spastic Children’s Foundation of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The $750,000 project will be financed with a Housing and Urban Development grant, $200,000 from the City of Buena Park and money from a private group in Newport Beach called Newport Spastic League, Shultz said.
Tenants of the new house will pay one-third of the rent, with the federal government picking up the tab for the remainder, said Felice Acosta, Buena Park community development officer.
Shultz could not say how many such homes exist in Orange County but said there is an unmet need, with about 20 people living in Los Angeles County for lack of such facilities here.
“The few homes that do exist in Orange County don’t serve people who are in wheelchairs, or have to be fed, or are assisted heavily,” Shultz said.
Often, people who are in need of such assistance end up resorting to state hospitals or nursing homes or remain at their parents’ homes, Shultz said.
