Kenneth Davis, former Texas Christian football star, told Sports Illustrated that he got as much as $38,000 from two TCU boosters to attend the Fort Worth school. Davis was suspended from the team Sept. 20, along with six other players, after they admitted having taken money from wealthy alumni.

In its Oct. 14 edition, SI quotes Davis as saying that on his first recruiting visit in 1980, he was given $350 while eating a pizza.

“I had tears in my eyes,” Davis said “Coming from a family of 12 children, I’d never seen that much money before. I was on cloud nine. Before leaving the bathroom, I looked at myself in the mirror and said, ‘I’m going to be a Horned Frog.’ ”

Later, however, he signed a letter of intent with Nebraska, then changed his mind when he was promised, in writing, a $3,700 up-front payment, clothes, a job at a ranch, a $200 monthly salary for which he wouldn’t have to work, a shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle and bonuses of $1,000 for signing a national letter of intent, and $500 for signing a conference letter. The total value was estimated at $38,000.
