Bennett’s Role
I am grateful to M. Greavu Jr. (Letters, Sept. 29) for raising an interesting issue.
When Secretary of Education William J. Bennett, whose responsibility extends to more than one form of education in our country, recognizes the contribution of schools other than public schools, he is considered by the writer to be a lobbyist on their behalf. Conversely, when the secretary advances the cause of public schools, which he seems to do quite consistently, is he then thought to be a lobbyist on their behalf? In either case, the term lobbyist does not appeal to me. I would expect him to be an advocate for both forms of schooling at the expense of neither.
Greavu’s perspective on the secretary’s role seems to me needlessly restricted.
