Police shot and killed two chimpanzees at the Cologne Zoo after they escaped from their cage and bit and severely injured the zoo’s director.

The director, Guenter Nogge, was rushed to a hospital with serious bite wounds and operated on immediately, a police spokesman said.

Nogge, 43, had been called to the zoo’s ape house after the chimps, both over 30 years old, escaped from their cage through an open door. They also bit and scratched a 19-year-old keeper who had tried to capture them, police said.
