The Los Angeles City Council has killed a proposal that would have cut the cost of monthly bus passes for student by $4. First- through 12th-grade students now pay $12, and college and vocational students pay $15 for the unlimited-use monthly passes on Southern California Rapid Transit District buses. The proposal would have used Proposition A transit tax money to cut the rate to $8 and $11 respectively, at a cost to the city of $11.7 million annually. The council voted in June to use the city’s share of the transit tax money to subsidize bus passes for the elderly and the handicapped.
