The government of Taiwan has denied it had any role in the murder of Chinese-American writer Henry Liu, whose widow filed a $295-million suit against the government. Liu, 52, was shot dead in his suburban San Francisco home last Oct. 15. His family and colleagues have said they believe he was killed because of articles he wrote that were critical of the Taipei government. The suit accuses the government, three gang leaders and three intelligence officers of conspiring in the murder and seeks compensation. A Taiwan Justice Ministry official said the government had “nothing to do with the Liu murder,” and noted that two of the three gang leaders have been sentenced and jailed in Taiwan because of the murder. A third is in custody in Brazil and faces extradition to the United States.
