Gary Grissom, the first person to receive a heart transplant in San Diego, was resting in serious condition Monday night, a spokesman for Sharp Memorial Hospital said.
Grissom’s condition was upgraded Monday from critical to serious, spokesman Ed Crawford said.
Crawford said Grissom, 48, a retired construction contractor who underwent surgery Friday night, is no longer on any life-support systems, and he ate three solid meals Monday. Grissom ate steak for dinner Sunday night, Crawford said.
“That’s a good sign this early,” Crawford said.
He said Grissom walked in his room Monday to exercise his legs. He also visited with his wife and spoke on the telephone with other family members.
