Typhoon Dot, the most powerful storm to threaten the Philippines in 15 years, bore down on the archipelago today, packing winds of 150 m.p.h. and triggering an alert on two U.S. military bases.

Dot gathered strength as it headed for the main northern island of Luzon, bearing rain clouds twice the size of the island. Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base were placed on the second highest alert, and authorities said maximum alert would be imposed early Friday.
