The Charlotte News will stop publishing Nov. 1.
The afternoon paper, first published in 1888, is dying because of declining circulation and revenue, owner Knight-Ridder Newspapers said. Charlotte’s dominant paper is the morning Observer, which is also owned by Knight-Ridder. At its highest point, in 1972, the News had a circulation of 69,409 but began slipping thereafter. From 1976 until 1981, Knight invested heavily in an attempt to turn around the circulation decline. Circulation continued to drop and is now at 34,700, the newspaper said.
