‘Sue Somebody’

Share

So a judge has ruled that Los Angeles County is liable for replacing all those homes destroyed in the Malibu rock slide. So what else is new? Increasingly, every disaster of nature, every life tragedy, comes these days both with someone to blame and a steep price tag. Does life contain a realm of blameless and accidental occurrences anymore? Or is every act of God merely an opportunity to sue someone, somewhere, somehow?

Those fat cats in Malibu know well the danger of precariously perching on a roost. So do private insurers; they won’t touch these houses with a 10-foot pole. Must the taxpayers of Los Angeles County be the insurance agency of last resort for people whose primary aim in life is status and a view? I’m sick of it.

I see the “sue-somebody-syndrome” stopping nowhere short of pricing a good deal of the private sector out of business through outrageous premiums.
