A San Diego police officer Thursday shot and killed one of two dogs that were attacking a 60-year-old woman in the 1100 block of 25th Street, a police spokeswoman said.

Ester Garcia suffered minor bite wounds from the two pit bulls that attacked her as she walked down the Southeast San Diego street.

Officer John Haley was patrolling the area when he saw the woman being attacked. After attempts to pull the dogs off the woman failed, Haley shot and killed one dog.

The second dog is being detained by animal control officers. The owner of the dogs, Julie Meator of the 1100 block of 25th Street, was cited for letting vicious animals loose, the spokeswoman said.
