A man arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on Aug. 27 after he concealed a money sack that his 23-month-old daughter had taken from a security guard’s cart became a fugitive when he failed to appear in Torrance Superior Court. Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Wallace said Judge Cecil J. Mills issued an arrest warrant for George Arias, 36, of Puerto Rico, who was to have been arraigned on charges of grand theft and misdemeanor child endangerment. Charges initially filed against Arias’ wife, Joanna, were dropped. When the couple were arrested, authorities said the child handed a pouch containing $8,000 to her father, who then placed it under his coat. However, the mother returned the money after a cashier alerted the guard. The child was placed in protective custody. Wallace said he did not know if the girl had been returned to her parents.
