One of two engines on a Republic Airlines jetliner carrying the Detroit Red Wings failed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport Thursday, forcing the DC-9 to turn around and make an emergency landing.

No injuries were reported to the six crew members or 82 passengers, an airline spokesman said. The Red Wings, headed for Minneapolis for a game against the Minnesota North Stars, were put on another plane.

Red Wings Coach Harry Neale said that he hoped the emergency landing would shake up his team, which had lost three games and tied one going into Thursday night’s game.

“It’s good for ‘em,” the first-year coach said. “They’ll play better. They’ll be upset, on edge . . . maybe.”

It didn’t quite work that way. The Red Wings lost, 10-1, as Minnesota goalie Don Beaupre stopped 32 of 33 shots. It was the North Stars’ first victory after two losses and a tie.

It was the second time this year that the Red Wings had encountered airplane trouble before playing the North Stars. The team was forced to cancel a Sept. 23 exhibition game against Minnesota after a propeller failed on their Air Ontario charter plane after takeoff from Sarnia, Canada, and prompted an emergency landing at Bay City.

The Red Wings opened the regular season earlier this month against Minnesota. They led, 6-2, early in the third period in what eventually ended in a 6-6 tie. Since then, the Red Wings have been outscored, 33-7, and have fallen to 0-4-1.

Hartford 4, New Jersey 3--Kevin Dineen scored his fourth goal of the season 1:49 into overtime as the Whalers won at East Rutherford, N.J. New Jersey had tied the score on a goal by Greg Malone with 4:55 left in regulation.

The victory improved the Whalers’ record to 3-1-0, while the loss dropped New Jersey to 3-1-0.
