UC Approves Increases in Budget, Fees
A $4.5-billion budget and a 7.5% student fee increase for the 1986-87 school year were approved Friday by University of California regents.
The budget is based on a request for an 11.7%, or $194-million, increase in state funds to a total of $1.9 billion. The increase is expected to be finalized by Gov. George Deukmejian and the Legislature by next June.
UC President David Gardner said the money will be used to help finance programs and research that have been neglected in the past, and for new construction, rehabilitation and expansion at the nine UC campuses.
The regents approved an educational fee hike from $722 to $793. It is used for the support of student financial aid and related programs and certain student service programs.
The registration fee, which averages $523, will increase to $563 and is used for counseling, academic advising and cultural and recreational programs.
The increased fees will add $13 million in revenues to the schools, Gardner said.
