Local News in Brief : 2 Teens Questioned in Calabasas Bomb Scare

Share

Two teen-age boys were held for questioning by police Friday night after a bomb scare near the Calabasas High School athletic field during a football game.

The suspected bomb turned out to be fashioned from several pieces of plastic tubing containing bottle rockets and other aerial fireworks. It was defused by arson experts of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident occurred as about 4,000 people watched a football game between Calabasas and Agoura high schools. Most of the crowd was oblivious to the incident, and the game was not interrupted.

The two boys were taken to the Malibu sheriff’s station for questioning.

The device was found on a hill 100 yards north of the field, Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Fitzsimmons said. There were no injuries or property damage, although county firefighters stood by as a precaution.

A student phoned earlier in the evening to say he had heard that “there would be an explosion at half-time,” Fitzsimmons said.

The California Highway Patrol closed part of Mulholland Highway for several minutes until the device was defused at about 9:30 p.m.
