As Expected, Angels’ Moore Will Test Free-Agent Market

Relief pitcher Donnie Moore, who set an Angel record with 31 saves, will test the free agent market as expected, agent David Pinter said by telephone from his New Jersey home Friday night.

Moore will file for free agency as soon as the filing period opens, which is one day after the World Series ends, Pinter said.

“We’re not closing the door on the Angels,” Pinter said. “Donnie wants to stay, but it’s my feeling that they don’t want him. They’ve offered only two years at half the price that the best relief pitchers in baseball are making. If a Bill Caudill can get $9 million from Toronto and Willie Hernandez $1.5 million a year from Detroit, why can’t Donnie? He’s prepared to go where the money is. He’s worked too hard for too long to pass up the security.”

Pinter said he took Moore house-hunting in the New York and New Jersey areas when the Angels were there in August and was confident both the Mets and Yankees would bid high for his services.

Angel General Manager Mike Port could not be reached for comment.
