DE-CLINING TRUTH
“Sweet Dreams,” the film that supposedly tells the story of country singer Patsy Cline, isn’t any more trustworthy a biography as a book.
Written by George Vecsey (who also helped Loretta Lynn write “Coal Miner’s Daughter”) with Leonore Fleischer, the St. Martin’s Press “novelization,” just out, reportedly is based on extensive research--but the facts weren’t juicy enough for readers.
“To make it a livelier story, there were certain things (Vecsey) had to make up,” a St. Martin’s publicist told Calendar. “He made up some of the dialogue and some of the drama involving her life with her husband. He wasn’t comfortable calling it nonfiction, so we called it a novel.”
But the $3.95 paperback isn’t really a novel and isn’t based on Robert Getchell’s screenplay either. “A little confusing,” admitted the publicist.
