2 Hurt in Crash With Police Car

A Los Angeles police squad car collided with a car driven by a Culver City man early Saturday, injuring him and his 11-year-old son. The two police officers in the squad car were treated for minor injuries.

The crash occurred about 5:15 a.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and Rodeo Road, said Officer Michael Carter of the specialized collision investigation detail, which examines accidents involving city vehicles that result in serious injuries or death.

Officer Denise Montgomery, a 3 1/2-year police veteran, was driving north on Crenshaw on routine patrol with her partner, Sean Mahoney, 24, when their car struck the side of a vehicle driven by Luis Larios, 40, which ran off the road and hit the pole of a billboard, Carter said.

Larios suffered a laceration to the brain, Carter said. A spokesman at Daniel Freeman Hospital said Larios was in surgical intensive care. His son, Michael, had a concussion and facial cuts, Carter said. He was treated at Freeman and transferred to USC-County Medical Center for observation.

Carter said a witness told police that the squad car entered the intersection while the signal light was yellow. “That would indicate that Larios was going through a red light,” Carter said.
