Bargain hunters and white-elephant collectors alike can have a field day this weekend, when the Junior League of San Diego holds its 42nd annual rummage sale at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

According to league member Leslie O’Neal, there will be more than 20 categories of items for sale, including stereo equipment, furniture, plants, books, appliances, sporting goods and clothing. In addition, the league will have an auction at 11 a.m. Saturday offering two cars, two vintage motorcycles, antique furniture, two kayaks, a player piano and other items.

The Junior League is a nonprofit community service organization. Money from the annual sale, which is the Junior League’s major fund-raiser, goes toward projects such as helping to place foster children in homes, painting houses for the elderly, drug and alcohol education and child care networks. Last year the sale raised more than $100,000.

League members expect more than 15,000 people to attend the sale this year. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Exhibit Hall. Parking at the fairgrounds is free.

Last year several hundred people spent the night outside the entrance to the hall in order to be among the first in the door.

“There’s one family already here today, Tuesday, to secure their spot to be first in line,” Chairwoman Betty Robertson said.
