In possibly the largest state capital protest since the Vietnam War era, as many as 12,000 doctors and their supporters rallied in Lansing, Mich., to demand curbs on medical malpractice suits. “The chaos of the liability system is about to bring a collapse of the entire judicial system,” said Dr. Richard McMurray, president of the Michigan State Medical Society, prime organizer of the event. The state estimates the average Michigan physician pays $52,000 per year for insurance with an average premium increase of 47% in 1985.
