Minimum Arsenals

In a letter to the editor more than three years ago, I called Kilpatrick an old goat. In the same letter, I said that his article “Where Are Conservatives on the Nuclear Danger?” might be one of the most important arguments yet to help save the human race and this planet.

In “Let’s Make a Deal on Minimum Arsenals,” Kilpatrick does it again. Even though I don’t share the “serene conviction . . . that there is not going to be a nuclear war. Ever . . .” I think his reasons for reducing our nuclear stockpile are logical enough to convince even the hardest heads. (Can hard heads be logical?)

I still think of Kilpatrick as an old goat. (He comes to his conclusions “with not the slightest help from any pacifist or peacenik outfit”. He calls Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s offer deceptive.) But even so--I’m almost begining to love the old ----. An old peacenik,
