Wrong on AIDS

Share

As an educator and parent, I am dismayed by the San Diego city school board’s rejection of the policy on school attendance by children with AIDS.

I try to teach my students the tools of my own discipline, history, so that they can understand the past, but also so that they can arrive at informed decisions in their own lives. Choice must be based on logic, compassion and the best available evidence. History is studded with the tragic results of relying on what we fear, rather than what we know.

Yet the three school trustees voting against this plan apparently chose to consult their own fears or misinformation, rather than medical and scientific expertise. In so doing, they set a poor example for the students with whose education they are charged.
