Save the Missions

Share

Sam Kaplan suggests (Oct. 6) that the Getty Trust involve itself with three architectural landmarks: the Ennis-Brown House, the Blacker House and the Pratt House. They are most certainly deserving.

Even more important historically and requiring immediate protection are the California Missions. As is the case with the three houses, the missions--not by design but through neglect, omission and ignorance--are gradually being desecrated, destroyed and remodeled without consideration for their architectural history.

It should be noted by all Californians that the San Diego, Santa Ynez and San Juan Bautista Missions in particular, have been violated by inappropriate alterations. Many years ago, (Charles F.) Lummis organized a movement to save the missions; it appears to me the Getty Trust has a wonderful opportunity to continue his efforts by saving these most precious California art treasures.
