Two night watchmen were arrested in Sacramento and charged with the theft of computer software programs used in the state lottery. Oh Kwon, 23, and Ki Yong Sung, 24, who had been working for California Plant Protection, a private security contractor, were charged with conspiracy to commit grand theft, receiving stolen property, computer crimes and infringement of computer copyrights. Lottery security chief Lew Ritter said the suspects, who are college students, allegedly had bragged about plans to become rich by selling the stolen computer programs. However, the stolen programs were used strictly for word processing and production of instructions for the instant lottery game, and had nothing to do with the computer system that produces lottery tickets. “There is no evidence to conclude that the integrity of the lottery instant game was compromised in any way by the theft of these materials,” Ritter said.
