An undercover Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy conducting a surveillance operation in the Wilshire area was shot at by five men, who apparently were attempting to rob him, officials said. The deputy, who was not identified, returned the fire, but no one was wounded and the gunmen fled, Los Angeles police said. The incident occurred while the deputy was parked in an unmarked car at Washington Boulevard and Carmona Street. Authorities refused to say what type of an investigation the deputy was conducting.
