Los Angeles County supervisors today ordered a study on closing down local bathhouses and similar “high-risk” businesses to combat the spread of the deadly AIDS virus.

“If these bathhouses are the source of death and contagion, then you should shut them down,” Supervisor Kenneth Hahn said. The board sent the proposed anti-bathhouse law to the county Public Health Commission, county counsel and other health authorities for recommendations. A report is due back in two weeks. The county has an estimated 16 bathhouse-type businesses, most of them in Los Angeles.
